Studying abroad can be an exciting and life-changing experience for international students. It opens up a world of opportunities and provides a chance to immerse oneself in a different culture and education system. When it comes to choosing the best destination for studying abroad, two countries stand out: the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia. Both countries offer excellent education systems, vibrant cultures, and unique experiences. In this blog, we will explore the key factors to consider when deciding between the UK and Australia as study destinations.

Education System in the UK and Australia

One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a study destination is the education system. Both the UK and Australia are renowned for their high-quality education systems and prestigious universities. In the UK, universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, and Imperial College London are known for their academic excellence and global reputation. Australia, on the other hand, is home to top-ranked universities like the University of Melbourne, Australian National University, and the University of Sydney.

In terms of the education system, the UK follows a more traditional approach with a strong emphasis on theoretical knowledge and research. Students in the UK typically specialise in a specific subject from the start of their degree. Australia, on the other hand, adopts a more flexible approach with a focus on practical and hands-on learning.

Top UK and Australian Universities

Top UK Universities QS World University Rankings 2024 Top Australian Universities QS World University Rankings 2024
University of Cambridge 2 The University of Melbourne 14
University of Oxford 3 UNSW Sydney 19
Imperial College London 6 The University of Sydney 19
UCL 9 Australian National University 34
The University of Edinburgh  22 Monash University 42
The University of Manchester 32 The University of Queensland 43

Eligibility Criteria

Another factor that students should consider before choosing between UK and Australia is the basic requirements that aspirants must meet in order to get an offer from their chosen university. Let’s compare the UK and Australia’s eligibility criteria:

Eligibility Criteria UK Australia
Academic Score Completion of UG and PG studies with a minimum of 65% – 70% Minimum 70% in the last attended degree
Standard Test GMAT/GRE or any other entrance exams for masters programs GMAT/GRE or any other entrance exams for masters programs
English Language Requirements IELTS: 6 – 6.5

PTE: 60 – 65

IELTS: 6.5 – 7.0

PTE: 50 – 58

Cost of Living in the UK and Australia

Another crucial factor to consider when choosing a study destination is the cost of living. Studying abroad can be expensive, and it is essential to consider the overall cost of living in the UK and Australia. In general, the UK has a higher cost of living compared to Australia. Cities like London and Oxford are known for their high rents and living expenses. The yearly tuition fees for international students in the UK for undergraduate courses might vary from £11,400 to £38,000 and for postgraduate courses it may vary from £10,000 to £30,000. Also, it is worth noting that most postgraduate courses in the UK can be completed in one year of full-time study. This has both financial and career benefits as it has fewer and lower associated costs and you have the option to faster enter or re-enter into employment.

Australia, on the other hand, offers a more affordable cost of living. The average cost of living hovers around AU$1400 to AU$2,500 every month. This includes all expenditures including food, accommodation, utilities and so on.  While cities like Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne can be more expensive. As for tuition fees, for undergraduate courses, the fee may vary from AU$ 9000 to AU$ 50,000 and for postgraduate courses, the fee range is from AU$ 9000 to AU$ 54,000.

Remember, tuition fees vary by course and institution, so we recommend you consult the university website for detailed information or connect with us before making a decision.

UK or Australia for International Students

Job Opportunities for International Students in the UK and Australia

One of the key considerations for international students is the availability of job opportunities during and after their studies. The UK and Australia both provide ample opportunities for international students to gain work experience and enhance their employability. In the UK, international students are allowed to work part-time (20 hours) during term-time and full-time during vacations. The government is planning to increase international students’ working hours limit, however, nothing has been accepted or implemented yet.

Australia, too, has a student-friendly work policy that allows international students to work up to 48 hours per fortnight during the academic year and full-time during vacations. Additionally, Australia offers a post-study work visa option, which previously allowed international students at the undergrad level to stay in the country for two years after the completion of their degree, while postgrad students could stay for three years and PhD students could stay for four years.  From July 2023, the Australian government has added an additional two years on top of the existing time allowed. Also, the country is suffering from a labour shortage, you will likely come across multiple job openings if you have the skills and qualifications relevant to specific occupations.

Lifestyle and Culture in the UK and Australia

The lifestyle and culture of a country play a significant role in the overall study-abroad experience. The UK and Australia both offer unique and vibrant lifestyles, each with its own charm. The UK and Australia both have some of the top student cities in the world. According to the  QS Best Student Cities rankings for 2024, London continues to hold first place, with Melbourne coming in at fifth place.

The UK is known for its rich history, cultural heritage, and cosmopolitan cities. It offers a diverse range of cultural experiences, from world-class museums and theatres to iconic landmarks and historic sites. The UK also has a thriving arts and music scene, making it an attractive destination for students interested in the arts.

Australia, on the other hand, is famous for its laid-back and outdoorsy lifestyle. The country is known for its stunning beaches, beautiful landscapes, and diverse wildlife. Australian cities offer a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, with a strong emphasis on sports and outdoor activities. The country’s multicultural society celebrates diversity and provides a welcoming environment for international students.

Climate and Weather in the UK and Australia

Climate and weather are important considerations for international students, as they can significantly impact one’s lifestyle and overall well-being. The UK is known for its temperate climate, characterised by mild summers and cool winters. The weather can be unpredictable, with frequent rain showers throughout the year. On the other hand, Australia has a diverse climate due to its vast size. The northern regions have a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, while the southern regions experience four distinct seasons. The weather in Australia is generally warmer and sunnier compared to the UK, which can be appealing for students who prefer a more outdoor-oriented lifestyle.

Dependents

It may not seem like a big deal breaker for some but for many students, the country they are considering to study in must allow dependents. In Australia, international students on students visa are usually allowed to bring close family members as dependents, this is defined as:

  • A spouse or partner
  • Your or your partner’s children, under 18 or who are still in continuous education.

Whereas in the UK, the government intends to prevent international students from bringing dependent from the beginning of January 2024- unless the student is there in a postgraduate program with a research focus.

Conclusion: Making an Informed Decision

Choosing the best study destination between the UK and Australia is a significant decision that can shape the future of international students. Both countries offer excellent education systems, unique cultural experiences, and exciting opportunities. By considering factors such as the education system, cost of living, scholarships, job opportunities, lifestyle, climate and eligibility criteria, students can make an informed decision that aligns with their goals and aspirations.
