This is the part where precision really matters, because two different occupations sit under the "early childhood" umbrella in Australia's migration system — and they lead to very different visa outcomes.

Your Diploma → Child Care Worker (ANZSCO 421111)

A Diploma or Certificate III/IV in Early Childhood Education and Care generally aligns with the Child Care Worker occupation (ANZSCO 421111, "group leader" roles), not the Early Childhood Teacher occupation.

Assessing authority: the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA)
Occupation list status: listed on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) — but, importantly, not on the MLTSSL, STSOL, or ROL
Realistic visa pathways: this occupation runs almost entirely through employer sponsorship rather than points-tested general skilled migration. The main routes are Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand, Core Skills stream, via the CSOL) and Subclass 186 Direct Entry, plus sponsorship in specific regions through a Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) where one covers childcare occupations. Subclass 494 may be an option with a regional employer sponsor.
Not eligible for the independent Subclass 189 visa, and general state-nominated Subclass 190/491 are essentially not available for this occupation code, since it doesn't sit on the MLTSSL/STSOL/ROL. This is a real, meaningful gap compared with Early Childhood Teacher (below) — don't plan around state nomination for this occupation without confirming directly with a migration agent first.

If your longer-term goal is the widest range of visa options, progressing from your diploma into a four-year Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) — as many diploma graduates do — opens up a significantly stronger pathway:

This occupation sits on both the MLTSSL and the CSOL, making it eligible for Subclasses 189, 190, 491, 482, and 186. Unlike Child Care Worker, this occupation is genuinely and widely nominated for state-sponsored 190 and 491 visas — most states and territories list it as a priority occupation given ongoing preschool/kindergarten expansion, though required points scores vary by state and round and can be competitive.
Important update: since 7 December 2024, the migration skills assessment for this occupation moved from AITSL to ACECQA (confirmed directly on AITSL's own website). If you already hold a valid AITSL assessment issued before that date, it remains valid through its original expiry.
English requirements for this occupation are high — generally IELTS Academic 7.0 in Reading/Writing and 8.0 in Speaking/Listening, or equivalent — reflecting its Skill Level 1 classification.
A three-year overseas Bachelor of Education is often assessed as insufficient on its own; a fourth-year top-up (commonly a Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Education from an Australian provider) may be required.

Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485)

Regardless of which occupation you're aiming for, many diploma and degree graduates use the Subclass 485 visa to gain local experience first. Since reforms took effect 1 July 2024, applicants must be under 35 (previously 50) at the time of application, and must apply within 6 months of completing their course.
