Planning to migrate to Australia as an engineer? The Engineers Australia skill assessment — officially known as the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) — is the first and most critical step in your skilled migration journey. Without a positive outcome from Engineers Australia, you cannot lodge an Expression of Interest in SkillSelect or receive an invitation for a subclass 189, 190, or 491 visa. Whether you hold an internationally accredited degree or need to submit a CDR, understanding the EA skill assessment process, fees, pathways, and document requirements upfront can save you months of delays and costly mistakes.

What Is the Engineers Australia Skill Assessment?

The Engineers Australia skill assessment — officially called the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA) — is a formal evaluation conducted by Engineers Australia (EA) to determine whether your engineering qualifications and work experience meet Australian professional standards. It is a critical step for engineers aiming to obtain a skilled migration visa under Australia's General Skilled Migration (GSM) program. Without a positive EA skill assessment, you cannot lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect or receive an invitation for visa subclasses 189, 190, or 491.

Who Needs an EA Skill Assessment for Australian Migration?

You should have an Engineers Australia skills assessment where your target skilled migration occupation lies in the engineering sector and is assessed by Engineers Australia. This applies to a broad range of engineering occupations — civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, software, and more. It is important to always verify the assessing authority of your particular ANZSCO occupation code before making an application, as some occupations are assessed by other bodies such as VETASSESS or the Australian Computer Society.

What Are the Engineers Australia Assessment Pathways?

EA offers multiple pathways depending on your qualifications:

Washington, Sydney & Dublin Accord Pathways The Washington Accord covers four-year engineering degrees and qualifies you for the Professional Engineer category. The Sydney Accord covers three-year engineering technology degrees and qualifies you for the Engineering Technologist category. The Dublin Accord covers Engineering Associates with advanced diplomas or equivalent. These are the fastest routes if your institution is a signatory member.

Australian Qualification Pathway Your program must be accredited by Engineers Australia, and you must have started your program during or after the year of accreditation commencement.

Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) Pathway If your degree is not from an accredited institution or not recognized under the accords, you must submit a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR). This is the most detailed and widely used pathway, especially for applicants from the Middle East, South Asia, and other regions. A CDR is a written portfolio consisting of three Career Episodes, a Summary Statement, and a CPD list. It demonstrates your engineering competencies through real-world project examples.

Documents Required for Your EA Skill Assessment

Ensure every document is accurate and complete — missing or inconsistent evidence is the single biggest reason for delays and unfavourable outcomes.

All Applicants:

  • Colour scan of passport or national ID
  • Degree certificate and academic transcripts
  • Updated CV
  • English language test results (unless exempt)

CDR Pathway (Additional):

  • 3 Career Episodes
  • Summary Statement
  • Continuing Professional Development (CPD) list

Optional but Recommended:

  • Employment evidence (letters with duties, dates, hours, and pay) if claiming Relevant Skilled Employment points

Engineers Australia Fees: What Does the Skill Assessment Cost?

All EA skill assessment fees are charged in Australian dollars (AUD) and are non-refundable. Key things to know:

2025–26 Fee Breakdown by Pathway:

  • CDR Pathway — AUD $1,001
  • Accord Pathway — AUD $539
  • Australian-Accredited Qualification — AUD $335.50
  • Fast Track Service — AUD $385 (additional)

Important Notes:

  • Fast Track reduces processing time to around 15 business days from queue entry
  • Fees are reviewed and updated annually on July 1st each financial year
  • Always confirm the latest figures on EA's official website before submitting

How Long Does the Engineers Australia Skill Assessment Take?

The comprehensive assessment typically requires 12–16 weeks for standard processing, while the fast track option reduces this to approximately 20 business days. Processing times can extend if documents are incomplete or further information is requested. Submitting a thorough, well-structured application from day one is the best way to avoid avoidable delays.

What Happens After a Positive EA Skill Assessment?

A positive Engineers Australia skills assessment opens several doors: you can submit your EOI in SkillSelect, claim skilled employment points, apply for state or territory nomination through subclass 190 and 491 programmes, and support employer-sponsored visa applications under subclass 482 and 494. Your skill assessment outcome is typically valid for 3 years from the date of issue. If it expires before visa lodgement, you'll need to renew by submitting a new application.

Common Reasons EA Skill Assessments Get Rejected

Engineers Australia updated its competency standards in 2025. Submissions that follow outdated formats or competency structures face higher rejection rates. Other common pitfalls include selecting the wrong ANZSCO code, submitting vague or generic Career Episodes, and insufficient evidence of skilled employment. Pick the correct ANZSCO and pathway from the start, provide clear and complete evidence including employment letters with duties, dates, hours, and pay, and make your CDR precise, original, and cross-referenced to EA competencies.
