Why Australian Tradies Are in High Demand Right Now

Australia is in the middle of a construction boom, a clean energy transition, and an acute skilled trades shortage — and the government is fast-tracking immigration to fill the gap. Whether you are a plumber, electrician, welder, carpenter, chef or diesel mechanic, Australia’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL) 2026 shows your trade is needed.

But navigating the visa system can feel overwhelming. With five main skilled visa subclasses available, each with different rules, pathways, and benefits, choosing the wrong one can cost you time and money. This guide breaks down the three most popular skilled visas — Subclass 189, 190 and 491 — in plain language, with a full comparison table, so you can make the right choice in 2026.

Quick Fact: As of 2026, all 34 skilled trade occupations on the MLTSSL are eligible for Visa 189, 190, and 491. Occupations on the STSOL (like Motorcycle Mechanic) can access 190 and 491, but NOT 189.

At a Glance: Visa 189 vs 190 vs 491

Here is a side-by-side comparison of the three most popular pathways for skilled tradies:

Feature Visa 189 Visa 190 Visa 491
Visa Type Permanent Permanent Provisional (5 yr)
Sponsor Required No State/Territory State/Terr. or Family
Live Anywhere in AU Yes No (2 yrs in state) No (3 yrs regional)
Occupation Lists MLTSSL only MLTSSL + STSOL MLTSSL + STSOL + ROL
Points Bonus None +5 points +15 points
Pathway to PR Already PR Already PR Subclass 191 after 3 yrs
Min. Points Score 65 (competitive 80+) 65 (varies by state) 65 (lower cut-offs)
Skills Assessment TRA required TRA required TRA required
Best For High scorers, flexibility Mid-range scorers, state ties Regional openness, lower points

Subclass 189 – Skilled Independent Visa (Permanent)

What Is It?

The Subclass 189 is Australia’s flagship points-tested permanent visa. There is no need for a job offer, employer, or state government sponsor — you apply as an independent skilled worker, and the Australian government invites you based solely on your points score.

How Does It Work?

  •       Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect
  •       Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) based on your points score
  •       Minimum threshold: 65 points (but invitations often go to 80+ for trade occupations)
  •       Your occupation must appear on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

Key Benefit: Once granted, Visa 189 gives you and your family permanent residence immediately. You can live, work and study anywhere in Australia with no state restrictions.

Which Tradies Qualify for Visa 189?

All 34 MLTSSL trade occupations are eligible, including the highest-demand roles:

  •       Electrician (General & Special Class) — $80,000–$140,000/yr | Very Strong demand
  •       Plumber (General) — $75,000–$110,000/yr | Very Strong demand | Top immigration priority
  •       Diesel Motor Mechanic — $70,000–$100,000/yr | Very Strong demand
  •       Carpenter & Joiner — $70,000–$100,000/yr | Very Strong demand
  •       Chef — $55,000–$85,000/yr | Very Strong demand | Top of priority lists
  •       Pressure Welder — $75,000–$110,000/yr | Very Strong demand | Specialist shortage

Points Test Snapshot

Points are awarded for:

  •       Age: 25–32 years = 30 points (maximum)
  •       English: Superior (IELTS 8+) = 20 points
  •       Skilled work experience (Australian and overseas)
  •       Australian qualifications
  •       Partner skills
  •       Community language, regional study

Pro Tip: If you are aged 25–32, have superior English and 8+ years of skilled work experience, you can score 90+ points — putting you in the highest priority bracket for trade occupations.

Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa (Permanent)

What Is It?

The Subclass 190 is a state or territory-nominated permanent visa. It works similarly to the 189, but requires a nomination from one of Australia’s eight states or territories. In exchange for that nomination, you receive a 5-point bonus on your points score and gain permanent residence immediately on grant.

How Does It Work?

  •       Submit an EOI in SkillSelect, express interest in state nomination
  •       Each state publishes its own occupation shortage list and EOI criteria
  •       You must commit to living and working in the nominating state for 2 years
  •       Receive state nomination, then receive federal ITA

Key Benefit: The +5 points bonus from state nomination can be the difference between waiting years or receiving an invitation quickly. It also opens access to STSOL occupations not available under Visa 189.

Which States Are Actively Nominating Tradies?

State programs change frequently, but historically the most active for trade nominations include:

  •       Western Australia (WA): High demand for mining-related trades — diesel mechanics, welders, fitters. Premium FIFO salaries ($118,000+)
  •       Queensland (QLD): Construction, electrical and plumbing trades in strong demand
  •       South Australia (SA): Strong pathway for chefs, carpenters and electricians
  •       Victoria (VIC): Active program for lift mechanics, glaziers, tilers and plasterers

Important: Each state operates its own criteria. Always check the official state government immigration website before lodging an EOI.

Key Differences from Visa 189

Visa 190 suits you if:

  •       Your points score is 65–75 and you need the +5 boost to be competitive
  •       Your occupation is on the STSOL (e.g., Motorcycle Mechanic, Small Engine Mechanic) and not eligible for 189
  •       You have a preference for a particular state or existing ties there

Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional)

What Is It?

The Subclass 491 is a 5-year provisional visa designed to encourage skilled workers to live and work in regional Australia. It offers the most generous points bonus (+15 points) and the widest occupation coverage — including the Regional Occupation List (ROL) in addition to MLTSSL and STSOL.

How Does It Work?

  •       Submit an EOI in SkillSelect
  •       Get sponsored by a state/territory government or an eligible family member living regionally
  •       Must live and work in a designated regional area for the 5-year visa duration
  •       After 3 years, become eligible to apply for permanent Subclass 191

Key Benefit: The +15 points bonus makes Visa 491 the most accessible pathway for tradies who don’t have a sky-high points score. Lower invitation cut-offs mean faster invitations for many trade occupations.

What Counts as Regional Australia?

Regional areas are designated postcodes outside of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane CBDs. This includes cities like:

  •       Adelaide, Perth, Hobart (all count as regional for some purposes)
  •       Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast, Newcastle, Wollongong
  •       Darwin, Cairns, Townsville
  •       Rural and remote areas across all states and territories

Who Should Choose Visa 491?

Visa 491 is ideal for tradies who:

  •       Have 65–75 points and need the +15 bonus to receive an invitation
  •       Are open to living in regional or smaller-city Australia
  •       Want a faster pathway than waiting for a 189 or 190 invitation
  •       Have family already living in a regional area who can sponsor them

Important: Visa 491 is provisional — not permanent. However, after 3 years of living and working regionally, you gain a clear pathway to permanent Subclass 191 residency.

Which Visa Is Right for You? The Decision Framework

Use this simple decision tree to identify your best pathway:

Your Situation Best Visa Option Why
High points (80+), MLTSSL occupation, want to live anywhere Visa 189 Permanent, no state ties, maximum freedom
Mid-range points (65–75), happy to live in a specific state Visa 190 +5 points bonus, permanent from day one
Lower points (65+), open to regional Australia Visa 491 +15 points bonus, lower cut-offs, PR pathway
STSOL occupation (e.g. Motorcycle Mechanic) Visa 190 or 491 189 not available for STSOL
Already have an employer in Australia Visa 482 or 494 Employer-sponsored pathway
In regional area, employer wants to sponsor Visa 494 Regional employer sponsored, leads to 191 PR

Salary & Demand: The Numbers That Matter

Understanding your earning potential is key to making the immigration investment worthwhile. Here are the highest-demand and highest-paying trades from the 2026 Skilled Occupation List:

Occupation Avg. Salary (AUD) SOL Status Demand Outlook
Electrician (Special Class) $95,000 – $140,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Lift Mechanic $85,000 – $130,000 MLTSSL Strong
AC & Mechanical Plumber $80,000 – $120,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Electrician (General) $80,000 – $120,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Plumber (General) $75,000 – $110,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Pressure Welder $75,000 – $110,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Gasfitter $75,000 – $105,000 MLTSSL Strong
Diesel Motor Mechanic $70,000 – $100,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Chef $55,000 – $85,000 MLTSSL Very Strong
Carpenter / Carpenter & Joiner $70,000 – $100,000 MLTSSL Very Strong

FIFO Bonus: Fly-In Fly-Out (FIFO) positions in mining and resources sectors — particularly in WA and QLD — command significantly higher salaries, often $118,000+ per annum for diesel mechanics, welders and fitters.

TRA Skills Assessment: The Essential First Step

Before you can apply for any skilled visa, you must pass a formal skills assessment through Trades Recognition Australia (TRA). This assessment verifies that your overseas qualifications and trade experience are comparable to Australian standards.

What TRA Assesses

  •       Your trade qualifications (certificates, apprenticeships)
  •       Your employment history and work experience
  •       On-the-job skills comparable to Australian Certificate III standard

How Long Does It Take?

TRA assessments typically take 3–6 months. Start your assessment as early as possible — it is your critical path item on the road to a visa invitation.

Documents You Will Need

  •       Certified copies of trade certificates and qualifications
  •       Employment references with dates, duties and employer contact details
  •       Identity documents (passport, birth certificate)
  •       English translations of any non-English documents

Reminder: Never submit a visa application before your TRA skills assessment outcome is confirmed. TRA assessment is mandatory for all 34 trade occupations on the skilled list.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I switch from Visa 491 to permanent residency?

Yes. After 3 years of living and working in a designated regional area on a Subclass 491 visa, you can apply for the permanent Subclass 191 (Permanent Residence Regional) visa.

What is the TSMIT and does it affect me?

The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) applies to employer-sponsored visas (482 and 494). For 2024–25, it is AUD $73,150 per annum. This means your employer must pay you at least this amount. Most skilled trade occupations well exceed this threshold.

My trade is on the STSOL. Can I get permanent residence?

Yes — via Visa 190 (permanent from day one) or Visa 491 (provisional, leads to 191 PR after 3 years). STSOL occupations are not eligible for Visa 189.

Do I need a job offer to apply for Visa 189 or 190?

No job offer is required for Visa 189 or 190. However, having a job offer can help boost your points score under certain categories, and it makes your settlement much smoother.

How long does the entire process take?

The timeline varies by occupation, state program and individual circumstances. As a rough guide: TRA Assessment (3–6 months) + EOI submission + waiting for ITA (3–18 months depending on points) + visa processing (4–12 months). Starting early and maximising your points score is the most effective strategy.
