Germany has become one of the best destinations to study for international students because it offers an exclusive combination of top universities, high-quality education, no tuition fees at public universities, and an exceptional quality of life. Although most universities in Germany offer degree programs exclusively in English and most international-based companies also operate in English, speaking and understanding the German language remains a valuable tool that can enhance both academic and career success in the country.

When international students arrive in Germany, the first thing they often notice is that learning the German language would enhance their social and academic experience. Although English may be the language of the classroom, German is the language of daily life in Germany. No matter whether it’s navigating bureaucratic processes, forming friendships, finding job opportunities, or planning for securing long-term residency in the country, learning German becomes more than just an advantage; it’s a necessity. It’s the perfect route to blend with the German community, leading to enhanced employment opportunities and PR in the future.

Why is it important for international students to learn German even if their courses are in English

Integration and Community Belonging

Moving to a new state is an exciting as well as overwhelming process. Adapting to a new culture is one of the major challenges international students face in a new country. Whereas it is true that many Germans, particularly in large cities and educational settings, do speak English, still at least basic German is required for day-to-day interactions.

Whether it is communicating with your neighbors, buying your groceries, trying to leverage and decipher the signs in the public transportation system, or any other similarly banal activity, having a working knowledge of German will help you make the respective experience less stressful and easier. More importantly, speaking the local language can help build a stronger bond with the local community. It is a way to show respect for the culture and generate opportunities for rich interaction that go beyond superficial forms of interaction.

Employment Opportunities (Part-time and Long-Term Jobs)

Many international students in Germany seek part-time jobs, commonly referred to as Neben jobs in the German language, to support themselves financially or gain work experience. Although the possibility of finding an English-speaking job, especially within the technological or international organizations, exists, but the majority of students work in cafes, retail, delivery services, or even customer service, which require German language skills.

Moreover, employers in Germany generally favor candidates who can operate easily in the local language for permanent jobs after graduation, especially in fields like marketing, sales, HR, and public sector roles. Mastering the language is an indicator to prospective employers that you are keen on staying and contributing to the workplace culture.

Better Pay Rates for Students Who Speak German

The international students in Germany are usually engaged in part-time jobs alongside their studies. The current minimum wage is €12.82 per hour for basic student jobs like dishwashing, delivery, or simple cafe work, especially if you don’t speak German well. But students who are good with the German language have access to higher-paying jobs like tutors, Student assistants, Support Staff, or research assistants. These jobs generally pay more, typically €15 and €20 per hour. So, learning German can expand your employment opportunities and help you earn a much higher hourly wage while you study.

Smoother Path to Permanent Residency (PR)

The German immigration route is relatively open for skilled graduates who wish to stay and work in the country after completing their studies. But one crucial factor that can play an important role in your permanent residency (PR) or settlement process is your proficiency in the German language.

For PR eligibility, a higher proficiency level in the German language is typically required. You need at least B1-level proficiency. Additionally, passing the ’Living in Germany’ test is often required. You can also take language tests like Goethe-Zertifikat, TELC, or TestDaF to prove your skills and strengthen your chances for permanent residency in Germany.

How to Get Started with Learning German

There are many universities in Germany that offer free or subsidized German language courses for international students. You can also explore language schools like Goethe-Institute, Volkshochschule (VHS), private tutors, and online platforms like Duolingo, Babbel, or Deutsche Welle for learning the German language.

If you are planning to complete a German language course in your home country before coming to Germany, it is important to keep in mind that most German universities and visa authorities only accept official language certificates from the Goethe-Institut.

Begin by learning simple and basic conversational phrases and build your vocabulary and grammar gradually. Even if you’re aiming only for a B1 level, it will surely make a noticeable difference in your experience.

Conclusion

While Germany has made great strides in providing higher education in the English language, life outside the lecture hall still centers on the German language. The German language will help you integrate better into German society.

Mastering German will not only open up doors of opportunities but also help you to make your stay in this country a truly fulfilling and life-changing experience.
