Overview Medical Laboratory Scientists (also known as Hospital Scientists or Medical Scientific Officers) perform clinical tests to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. This role is classified as Skill Level 1 (Bachelor degree or higher).

1. Skills Assessment (AIMS)

To apply for most skilled visas, you must obtain a positive assessment from the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS).

Assessment Pathways

  • Option 1 (Accredited Qualification): For applicants holding a degree listed on the AIMS accredited list. No professional exam is required.
  • Option 2 (Non-Accredited Qualification): For applicants with a relevant science degree (AQF Level 7/8) that is not AIMS accredited.
    • Prerequisites: Must have 2 years of diagnostic pathology work experience within the last 5 years.
    • Process: Document assessment followed by the AIMS Professional Examination.
    • Exam Details: 3-hour exam (March/September) covering short answers and multiple-choice questions. A 50% score is required to pass.

English Language Requirement (AIMS Only) All applicants must provide valid English test results:

  • IELTS: Overall 7.0
  • TOEFL: Total 95
  • PTE Academic: Overall 65
  • OET: Grade B in all components

3. Employer Sponsored Visas

Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme

  • Status: Permanent residency.
  • Experience: Requires at least 3 years of full-time experience.
  • English: Competent English (IELTS 6.0).
  • Age: Under 45 (unless exempt).

Subclass 494 – Regional Sponsored (Provisional)
