Overview Medical Laboratory Scientists (also known as Hospital Scientists or Medical Scientific Officers) perform clinical tests to aid in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases. This role is classified as Skill Level 1 (Bachelor degree or higher).
Key Tasks
- Analyzing samples to study microbial infection effects.
- Preparing tissue sections for microscopic review.
- Developing diagnostic techniques for diseases and sleep/respiratory disorders.
- Advising medical practitioners on test interpretation.
- Maintaining laboratory safety, quality assurance standards, and equipment.
1. Skills Assessment (AIMS)
To apply for most skilled visas, you must obtain a positive assessment from the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS).
Assessment Pathways
- Option 1 (Accredited Qualification): For applicants holding a degree listed on the AIMS accredited list. No professional exam is required.
- Option 2 (Non-Accredited Qualification): For applicants with a relevant science degree (AQF Level 7/8) that is not AIMS accredited.
- Prerequisites: Must have 2 years of diagnostic pathology work experience within the last 5 years.
- Process: Document assessment followed by the AIMS Professional Examination.
- Exam Details: 3-hour exam (March/September) covering short answers and multiple-choice questions. A 50% score is required to pass.

- IELTS: Overall 7.0
- TOEFL: Total 95
- PTE Academic: Overall 65
- OET: Grade B in all components
