The Genuine Student Requirement — Australia's New Student Visa Test Explained

Since March 2024, every student visa applicant must satisfy the Genuine Student Requirement (GSR). Understanding it could be the difference between approval and refusal.

What Is the Genuine Student Requirement (GSR)?

The Genuine Student Requirement replaced the previous Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criterion for Student Visa (Subclass 500) and Student Guardian Visa (Subclass 590) applications lodged from 23 March 2024. Rather than asking whether you intend to stay in Australia temporarily, the GSR focuses on whether you are a genuine student — someone who will genuinely engage with their studies and comply with visa obligations.

🔑 The GSR is assessed holistically. There is no single document that proves you are a genuine student — it is an overall impression formed from your circumstances, statements, and supporting evidence.

What Does a Decision-Maker Consider Under the GSR?

Value of the Course

Will the proposed study genuinely benefit you educationally, professionally, or personally? Is the course consistent with your background and goals?

Immigration History

Your previous visa compliance record — including overstays, cancellations, or refusals — is a key consideration in the GSR assessment.

Circumstances in Home Country

Your personal, economic, and family ties to your country of origin — all factors that demonstrate your overall situation and intent.

Potential for Visa Compliance

Evidence of intent to abide by work-hour limitations, study obligations, and any other visa conditions relevant to your visa type.

Course Consistency

Is the proposed course consistent with your previous education? Unexplained step-downs in study level or course switches may raise questions.

English Proficiency

Adequate English language ability supports the view that you will be able to genuinely engage with your studies at the nominated institution.

GTE vs GSR — Key Differences

Criterion Old GTE (pre-March 2024) New GSR (from March 2024)
Core question Do you intend to stay temporarily? Are you a genuine student?
Focus Intention to leave Australia after study Genuine engagement with studies
Statement required GTE statement addressing temporary intent GSR statement addressing all relevant factors
Applies to Subclass 500 only Subclass 500 and 590

Common GSR Pitfalls

  • Submitting a generic GSR statement not tailored to your personal circumstances
  • Failing to address study gaps or prior academic underperformance
  • Not explaining why you chose a particular course or institution
  • Ignoring the course consistency question — particularly for step-down applications
  • Providing insufficient evidence of financial capacity and genuine study intent
