Quick answer: If your visa is cancelled, any bridging visa attached to it (BVA, B, or C) ceases at the same moment — it doesn't survive the cancellation. The visa that typically becomes available afterward is the Bridging Visa E (BVE), and only in specific circumstances.

Do You Get a Bridging Visa If Your Visa Is Cancelled?

Not automatically. The moment your substantive visa is cancelled, you become an unlawful non-citizen bridging visa territory — meaning you hold no valid visa at all. Any BVA, BVB, or BVC that was linked to your now-cancelled visa ceases at the exact same time. The only pathway back to lawful status in most cases is applying for a BVE after visa cancellation, and eligibility depends heavily on what you do next: departing voluntarily, seeking ART review, or pursuing another available application.

BVA vs BVE After Cancellation: Why the Difference Matters

This is where most people get confused.

  • BVA is granted automatically when you lodge a new substantive visa application before your current visa expires. It cannot be applied for once you're already cancelled and unlawful.
  • BVE is the visa designed specifically for people who have lost lawful status — including through cancellation — and need time to resolve their situation, whether that's departing, awaiting a decision, or pursuing merits review.

So if you're asking, "Can I apply for BVA after visa cancellation?" — generally, no. Once cancellation happens, BVE is almost always your only route.

What Bridging Visa Do I Get After Visa Cancellation?

For most cancelled visa holders, the answer is the Bridging Visa E (subclass 050 or 051). You may be eligible if you're:

  • Making arrangements to depart Australia voluntarily
  • Waiting on a decision for a substantive visa application you were eligible to lodge
  • Seeking Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) review of the cancellation
  • Pursuing judicial review or ministerial intervention

How Long Does a Bridging Visa E Last After Cancellation?

There's no fixed expiry — a BVE remains valid until your immigration matter is resolved, whether that's a tribunal decision, a new visa outcome, or your departure. Some grants come with shorter validity periods requiring regular reporting, so staying on top of Department of Home Affairs correspondence matters enormously.

Bridging Visa Work Rights After Cancellation — Can You Work on a BVE?

By default, most BVEs carry Condition 8101, meaning no work rights. However, you can apply for work rights if you can demonstrate genuine financial hardship. It's not automatic, and the evidence bar is real — bank statements, expenses, and proof you cannot otherwise support yourself.

Can I Travel on a Bridging Visa After Cancellation?

No. BVE holders generally cannot travel overseas and return. Leaving Australia while on a BVE typically ends your bridging visa status altogether, which can seriously complicate your case.
