🎓 Why Study Teaching?

Australia’s education sector is respected globally, with teaching programs that offer comprehensive training to equip students with essential skills for educating young minds. Graduates from teaching degrees can anticipate a rewarding career in early childhood, primary, or secondary education. Furthermore, teaching in Australia presents a fulfilling career path that can lead to permanent residency, making it an appealing option for international students. Teaching programs are divided into three categories: Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, and Secondary Education.

  • Impact on Society: Teaching is rewarding and allows you to play a pivotal role in shaping the development of children and future generations. Teachers influence not only academic outcomes but also emotional and social growth, playing a key role in preparing students for adult life. This field facilitates the development of educators with a strong academic background, outstanding professional abilities, and a focus on equity and social justice. This position requires a commitment to personal and professional growth to effectively impact students’ lives and their future success.
  • High Employment Demand: The Australian government continues to forecast growing demand for qualified teachers due to population growth and educational reforms, particularly in early childhood education and secondary education. With a teaching qualification, you can apply for positions in both government and non-government schools across Australia and many other countries. This strong demand provides job security and a wide range of opportunities for new graduates. With the salary range of $70,000 – AUD 130,000 for graduate teachers to an experienced teacher depending on the state.
  • Job Satisfaction: Australian teaching qualifications are esteemed worldwide, offering significant opportunities both within Australia and internationally. Many teachers report high job satisfaction from the opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives. Teaching also offers diverse career progression opportunities, including leadership roles, counselling, and curriculum design.
  • Diverse Opportunities: The skills gained from a teaching degree open up numerous career pathways. Teachers can work in public or private schools, international schools, educational consulting, or non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Beyond classroom teaching, you can explore administrative roles, educational policy, curriculum development, and education administration.

🏫 Types of Degrees for Students Considering a Career in Teaching

  • Diploma of Education Support: Entry-level qualification for those supporting educators, typically for roles as teaching assistants or special education aides. The term diploma of teaching is a qualification required to work in schools, childcare, or early childhood environments. Diploma of Teaching isn’t equivalent to teaching qualifications aimed at primary or secondary school teachers. Instead, you’d usually be looking at Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees for those roles. This diploma takes 12-18 months usually for full-time.
  • Diploma of Early Childhood Education and Care: It is the qualification for those who want to work in early childhood education centres, daycare facilities, and preschools. It educates on child development, educational programs, family communication, and safe practices in early childhood environments. This diploma takes 12-24 months usually.
  • Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood or Secondary): It is a comprehensive undergraduate degree for aspiring teachers who want to teach early childhood education (ages 0-8) or secondary education (ages 12-18) taking 3 to 4 years to complete. The bachelors of Education (Early Childhood) focus on early childhood development learning through play, inclusive education, curriculum design for young learners, and engaging with families and communities. It focuses on Key Skills of Child development knowledge, creating engaging lesson plans, supporting social-emotional development, managing diverse learning needs, and fostering a safe and inclusive learning environment. Some programs provide specialization in areas such as special education or language and literacy development. Whereas Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is the curriculum design for secondary education, teaching pedagogies, subject-specific knowledge, adolescent development, and classroom management. Providing specializations in specific subject areas such as English, Mathematics, History, or Physical Education, depending on their interests and strengths.
  • Graduate Diploma of Education: It is a postgraduate qualification for individuals who have completed an undergraduate degree in a non-education field but wish to transition into teaching. It is beneficial for individuals who want to enter the teaching profession quickly and effectively, without pursuing a full Master of Education or Bachelor of Education program. This diploma focuses on Early Childhood Education with the developmental stages of young children and how to engage and educate them in preschool and early school settings at the core while Secondary Education is designed for individuals who want to become subject-specific teachers in secondary schools. The Graduate Diploma of Education puts strong emphasis on classroom management, curriculum design, pedagogical theory, and assessment practices. There are also practical placements, where students are required to spend time teaching in a classroom under the supervision of a qualified mentor teacher.
  • Master of Teaching: For individuals holding a relevant undergraduate degree who wish to become professional educators. It is often a requirement for those wishing to teach in Australian primary and secondary schools. It is a postgraduate program designed for individuals with a relevant undergraduate degree.
