You can't just pick an assessing body you like — Australia assigns one specific authority to your occupation, and applying to the wrong one wastes money and months. Here's how to find yours and book it correctly the first time.
You Don't "Shop Around" — Your Occupation Decides The Authority
A skills assessment for Australian immigration is booked directly with whichever body the Department of Home Affairs has designated for your nominated occupation — not a body of your choosing. Software engineer? That's ACS. Civil engineer? Engineers Australia. Marketing manager or HR adviser? VETASSESS. Nurse? ANMAC, ahead of AHPRA registration. Teacher? AITSL. Electrician, chef, or mechanic? TRA. Between them, these six bodies handle the overwhelming majority of skilled migration assessments in Australia.
Booking With VETASSESS
VETASSESS is the catch-all authority, covering over 340–360 professional, managerial, and general occupations — everything from social workers to economists to hospitality managers. You book directly through the VETASSESS online portal, where fees for professional occupations currently sit in the AUD 1,000–1,300 range with a roughly 7-week standard processing target.
Booking With ACS, Engineers Australia, Or CPA/CA ANZ/IPA
- ACS (Australian Computer Society) handles ICT, software, data, and cybersecurity roles via its own online application system — among the more affordable options, and known for strict scrutiny of degree relevance, so non-ICT qualifications often get routed through an RPL pathway.
- Engineers Australia is the sole assessor for engineering occupations, booked through its portal using a Competency Demonstration Report (CDR) — plagiarism detection is active here, so originality matters.
- Accountants get a genuine choice between three bodies — CPA Australia, CA ANZ, or IPA — each booked independently, with the right one depending on your post-migration career plans.
Booking With TRA, ANMAC, Or AITSL
- TRA (Trades Recognition Australia) manages trade occupation bookings — electricians, plumbers, chefs, mechanics — through its online portal, generally the most involved process given practical and technical components.
- ANMAC is the required stop for overseas nurses and midwives before AHPRA registration, booked via its own application system, with English evidence typically required upfront.
- AITSL handles teacher assessments and is notably one of the faster routes, with no GST added regardless of whether you're applying onshore or offshore.
