The bottom line: These are the two original names for what are now called the Post-Vocational Education Work stream and the Post-Higher Education Work stream — renamed under the subclass 485 reforms from 1 July 2024. The names changed, but the core split hasn't: one is built around your qualification level, the other around your occupation matching a skills list. Which one applies to you depends entirely on what you studied.
Same Visa, Two Very Different Doors
Both streams sit under the subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa, but they were never interchangeable — each has its own eligibility test, and picking the wrong one on your application doesn't just slow things down, it can end in refusal.
Graduate Work Stream (Now Post-Vocational Education Work)
This stream was built for diploma, trade, and associate degree holders. The defining requirement: your qualification has to link to an occupation on the relevant skilled occupation list, and you need a positive skills assessment from the matching assessing authority before you apply. No skilled occupation match, no eligibility here — regardless of how strong your qualification otherwise is.
Duration: 18 months.
Best fit for: graduates of vocational and trade courses whose training maps directly onto a listed skilled occupation.
Post Study Work Stream (Now Post-Higher Education Work)
This stream covers Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral graduates from CRICOS-registered courses of at least two academic years. Unlike its counterpart, there's no occupation list to match and no skills assessment required — your degree level does the qualifying.
Duration: 2 years for Bachelor's and Master's by coursework; 3 years for Master's by Research and PhD, reflecting the longer research investment.
Best fit for: university graduates at any degree level, regardless of field of study.
