Australia doesn't run one skilled visa — it runs a system of them, and picking the wrong one wastes months. Here's the map.

🧭 Quick Pathway Finder

Your situation Likely pathway
Strong points score, no job offer Subclass 189
Decent score, open to state nomination Subclass 190
Borderline score, open to regional living Subclass 491
Already have an employer sponsor Subclass 482
Two years into a 482 with the same employer Subclass 186

Pathway 1 — Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent)

No sponsor, no nomination — just your own profile against the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). It's the most direct general skilled migration visa pathway to permanent residency, and also the most competitive: the minimum pass mark is 65 points, but real invitation rounds are routinely won at 85–100+.

Pathway 2 — Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated)

Same points system as the 189, plus a state or territory nomination — which adds bonus points and unlocks a wider set of state-specific occupation lists. Trade-off: you commit to living in the nominating state for a period.

Pathway 3 — Subclass 491 (Skilled Work Regional)

A provisional visa, not permanent — but it's the most accessible entry point in the points-tested system thanks to a 15-point regional bonus from state/territory nomination or eligible family sponsorship. Three years of regional living and work opens the door to permanent residency via the Subclass 191.

⚠️ Worth knowing: the government has confirmed a structural reform to the points test is coming — expected to weight age (favouring the 25–32 bracket) and English proficiency more heavily. If you're mid-EOI on a 189, 190, or 491, this is worth building into your timing now, not after it lands.

Pathway 4 — Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand)

This is the employer-sponsored visa pathway, and it skips the points test entirely. If you have a genuine job offer from an approved Australian sponsor, eligibility runs on occupation lists and salary — the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) currently sits at AUD 76,515, rising to AUD 79,499 from 1 July 2026. For applicants worried about the points reform making the GSM route harder, this is the parallel option worth exploring.

Pathway 5 — Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme)

The long-game PR route: after two years working for the same sponsor on a 482, the Temporary Residence Transition stream of the 186 converts that employment into permanent residency.

Building A Real Strategy

These pathways aren't either/or. A strong candidate might sit on an EOI for 189/190 while also exploring 482 sponsorship as a parallel track — especially with points test reform on the horizon and occupation lists shifting regularly enough that last year's advice can be outdated advice.

At Edvise Hub, we look at your occupation, points position, and employment situation together and map out which pathway — or combination — actually fits where you stand today.
