University of Wollongong: Overview

Founded in 1951, the University of Wollongong is a public university located in Wollongong, Australia. Since its inception, the University of Wollongong has become a benchmark for a new generation of Australian universities; dynamic, innovative and prominent in national and international rankings of the quality of their teaching and research. With more than 36,000 students enrolled, including approximately 7,600 international students, the university is a large community, ranking among the top one per cent of universities in the world.

Accomplishments and Alumni:

The University of Wollongong is one of the best public universities in Australia. It is ranked 185th in the QS World University Rankings 2023. University of Wollongong graduates are highly respected and employers consistently place them in the top one per cent of the world. The university prides itself on preparing students for emerging industries and future employment. The University of Wollongong (UOW) has been ranked 31st in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2020.

The commitment and efforts of the University of Wollongong’s highly qualified academic staff have earned them a global reputation for excellence in teaching and learning. This was highlighted by the Spotlight Award at the Global Teaching Excellence Awards 2018, which recognizes the University of Wollongong among the world’s top institutions for teaching excellence. UOW staff are encouraged and empowered to find innovative ways to solve real-world problems and work with some of the brightest minds around the world. University of Wollongong: Campus

The main campus of the University of Wollongong is located in the original Australian bush and is one of the most picturesque university campuses in Australia. The Wollongong campus offers a comprehensive range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Courses are offered in five faculties, namely the Faculty of Business, the Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences, the Faculty of Science, Medicine and Healthcare, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law, Humanities and Arts.

University of Wollongong: Acceptance rate for international students

The acceptance rate of the University of Wollongong is one of the cosmopolitan student universities. In terms of rankings, it is consistently ranked among the best universities in Australia. Globally, they make a huge impact as they strive to meet the standard of other schools. The University of Wollongong has an acceptance rate of 30%.

University of Wollongong: Admission Requirements

The University of Wollongong has a total enrollment of 36,038 students, including 24,450 undergraduates and 8,368 postgraduates. University of Wollongong currently has 6,000 internationals from 184 different countries. The University of Wollongong has no specific deadline for admission. It varies for each department for the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs offered by the institute for international and domestic candidates.

Following are the basic admission requirements:

  • High school diploma/qualification equivalent to 13 years of Australian schooling.
  • Electronic or hard copies of official transcripts/academic records/mark sheets translated into English.
  • Standardized test scores required to study in Australia

Academic Requirements for Undergraduate Admissions

The University of Wollongong offers 270 undergraduate programs through its faculties of Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, Business and Law, Engineering and Information Sciences, and Science, Medicine and Health. Each program has its own set of application requirements that applicants must meet before applying to the programs. Below are some common admission requirements for all programs.

  • Completed application
  • Official Grade 12 Transcripts (They must be accompanied by English translations if they are not in English.)
  • A minimum of 12 years of high school education with a minimum percentage of 85% or 2.7 GPA.
  • Letter of recommendation
  • Program-specific requirements.
  • International applicants must submit English test results (TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo). The minimum required scores are:
  • TOEFL: 90 (iBT)
  • IELTS 6.0
  • Bank statements

Academic Requirements for Post-Graduate Admissions

A variety of full-time and part-time programs, including certificates, diplomas and research degrees, are offered at the university’s graduate-level to aspirants from around the world who wish to study in Australia.

Below are the academic requirements that candidates must meet in order to be admitted to graduate programs:

  • Honours with 2nd Class Division or higher
  • Minimum GPA (out of 4 scales)
  • English proficiency test results
  • If overseas medical cover is not available, it must be purchased for the duration of the course.

The entire procedure is the same as for undergraduate admissions except for the special requirements listed below:

Creative disciplines – School of Art, English and Media

Admission to HDR degrees in creative disciplines is determined by the assessment of the application and research project proposal. Applicants may be asked to provide additional information and/or attend an interview

DBA application

DBA applications must provide an overview of professional experience and demonstrate the ability to access relevant industries to meet research requirements. Applicants will also be required to attend an interview.

English Language Requirements

Non-native English-speaking students from overseas must demonstrate their English proficiency through tests such as IELTS/TOEFL etc. in addition to course admission requirements. If you are submitting TOEFL scores, you must arrange for Princeton to directly transmit the official test score reporttoUniversity of Wollongong. Students can also meet the English proficiency requirement by taking an English course at the University of Wollongong.

Although English requirements are course-specific, common test scores and minimum grades accepted by the University of Wollongong are as follows:

Application Fee

The application fee for undergraduate programs and post-graduate programs ranges between 70-150 AUD. There is no application fee for online applications.

University of Wollongong: Scholarships

All Australian citizens and eligible non-citizens can apply for scholarships at UOW. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a resource for students seeking financial aid from UOW. Scholarships are only available to students who are either scholars and have secured high grades, or students who have extreme financial circumstances. With campuses around the world, the University of Wollongong receives investment through various means and these investments and sponsorships help offer better financial aid to its students. Grant types at the University of Wollongong include:

  • Subsidized grant

This grant is given to students with extreme financial conditions and the grant is interest-free. The cost is estimated at around $3,500.

  • Unsubsidized Grant

This grant is not based on financial need but is awarded on a need basis, so interest is charged over a period of time and the award is $2,000.

  • PLUS Grant

This grant is given to parents of graduates/students to cover the cost of their student’s education. The total cost of this grant is up to $5,000.
