University of Chicago: Overview

The University of Chicago is a private institution that was founded in 1890. It has a total undergraduate student population of 7,526, an urban setting, and a campus size of 217 acres. It uses a quarterly academic calendar. The University of Chicago’s ranking in the 2022-2023 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, #6.

The University of Chicago, situated in Hyde Park, offers a rich campus life in a big-city setting. In addition to the college, the university has postgraduate offerings that include the highly ranked Booth School of Business, Law School, Pritzker School of Medicine and Harris School of Public Policy. University of Chicago: Acceptance rate for international students:

The University of Chicago is among the most selective institutions in the United States. With acceptance rates in the single digits, gaining admission to the university will be competitive. The University of Chicago’s acceptance rate for fall 2020 is 7.3%. This simply means that the University of Chicago only accepts 7 out of every 100 applications.

In 2021, the University of Chicago received a total of 37,986 applications and only 2,408 of those applications were accepted. Most of the applications received by the university came from applicants from the United States and other international countries.

University of Chicago: Admission requirements

If you want to get in, the first thing to look at is the acceptance rate. This tells you how competitive the school is and how serious its requirements will be. The acceptance rate at the University of Chicago is 7.3%. This means that the school is extremely selective. Meeting their GPA and SAT/ACT requirements is very important to get past their first round of filters and demonstrate your academic preparation. The average GPA at the University of Chicago is 4.48. With a GPA of 4.48, the University of Chicago requires you to be at the top of your class. You will need almost straight A’s in all your classes to compete with other applicants. If you are currently a junior or senior, it is difficult to change your GPA in time for college applications. If your GPA is at or below the school average of 4.48, you will need a higher SAT or ACT score to compensate. This will help you compete effectively against other applicants who have a higher GPA than you.

University of Chicago: SAT/ACT Requirements:

You must take either the SAT or ACT to submit an application to the University of Chicago. However, applicants who think they have a better chance of being accepted into a university can submit their SAT and ACT scores. The average University of Chicago SAT score is 1520 on the 1600 SAT scale whereas the average ACT score at the University of Chicago stands at 34.

Academic Requirements for Undergraduate Programs:

  • Official High School Transcripts (Must be accompanied by English translations if not in English.)
  • SAT/ACT Scores (Test-Optional)
  • International applicants must submit English Proficiency Test Scores

Academic Requirements for Postgraduate Programs:

The University of Chicago has 12 graduate schools that offer more than 101 courses. Most graduate programs have different requirements, fees, and admission processes. The students apply to get enrollment during the autumn semester.

  • Minimum 3.0 in Undergraduate degree
  • GRE/GMAT/LSAT score: (Average scores)
  • GRE Verbal/Quant: 162/163
  • GMAT: 732
  • LSAT: 191  
  • English language test scores like TOEFL/IELTS are required.
  • Degrees, transcripts, translated transcripts if not in English, grading system,
  • Interviews: Maybe conducted, depending upon the course requirement.

International applicants for admission to the University of Chicago must meet the English language requirements established by the university or academic program. English language policies differ for undergraduate and graduate students. For graduate certificate and degree programs, evidence of English proficiency is a requirement for admission.

Merit Scholarships

Merit scholarships are awarded to applicants based on outstanding academic and extracurricular achievements. Exemplary students are selected during the admissions process to receive merit-based scholarships that are guaranteed for four years of study (provided good academic standing is maintained). Merit awards are determined by the Merit Scholarship Committee regardless of financial need. All students, including first-year applicants, are automatically considered for merit scholarships, no further merit scholarship application is required.

International students are only eligible for funding if they apply for it during the admissions process and are not asked for funding after admission to the university.
