Game design and interactive media

Eligibility criteria: Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) or 3 years of work experience in animation, games, interactivity and/or digital media, complete the pre-selection kit, pass the interview, IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)

Career options: 2D or 3D animation, motion graphics design, interaction design, visual effects, games development, web design, character design, pre-production art, app and web development, VR and AR projects. You can also work in research or any of the affiliated game industries- ACMI- X or Exertion Games Lab (XGL). 

Merchandising

RMIT offers a variety of undergraduate courses in merchandising- which is the intersection of creativity and business. You will be able to create an impressive portfolio of work for fashion designing and learn the art of product development, fashion marketing and retail management. You will also get the opportunity to get internships with big brands like Cotton On, and the Dior Women Program. The courses offered in RMIT are one of the best fashion designing courses in Australia.

Graphic and Communication Design

Through the work with design experts and industry experience, you will learn to be a visual problem-solver which can help you start your own business or work in a range of jobs in Australia or elsewhere. Using the tools of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, you will develop the visual skills required in the fields of illustration, computer aided design, typography, packaging design, books, advertising, publicity material and social media marketing.

Industrial, furniture and product design

By studying the contemporary, cultural and environmental factors of design and tech, you can create products that will do well commercially. The furniture design course has won an award and after completing your degree, you can participate in London Design Week, Fringe Design, Workshopped Design Show Australia, and VIVID (Décor + Design). The curriculum is mostly hands-on and you will be encouraged to create sustainable designs. The industrial design course teaches students to combine their creativity and technical expertise to create machinery and systems for problem-solving.

You can get a job in manufacturing companies, in consultancy, entertainment, education, cultural and services sectors, and for research institutions.

 

Interior Design

Interior design can change the social, cultural, technological and environmental conditions by addressing and researching the relation between individuals and their environments. The goal is to create aesthetically pleasing, functional and sustainable spaces where people can work, live and play. You will learn the skills of rendering, architectural drafting, sketching, perspective drawing, CAD, Revit, model making, Photoshop and client presentation which is what a junior designer is supposed to do. 

There are two undergraduate courses being offered in this category: 

  • Associate Degree in Interior Decoration and Design

Career options: architect assistants, manager in interior decoration companies, work for retail consultancies in furnishings, lighting or furniture, colour consultancies, either for large paint companies or in self-employment.

  • Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours)

Eligibility criteria: Australian Year 12 or an equivalent senior secondary school qualification with a minimum average of 70%, completed selection task, IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)

Career options: Graduates are working in big firms like Woods Bagot and the National Gallery of Victoria. You can also have an independent practice or work in residential, retail and entertainment, hospitality, corporate office and public building design. 

  • Master of Interior Design

Location: Melbourne City

Duration: 2 years

Fees: 44,160 AUD per year

Eligibility criteria: Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in a related discipline including Interior Design, Spatial Design, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Spatial Arts, Theatre Design, Exhibition Design, Service Design, Industrial Design, Experience Design. If your GPA is less than 2.5 out of 4, a completed pre-selection kit is required. IELTS score of 6.5 (with no individual band below 6.0)

Career options: You can offer interior design and architectural services for restaurants, hotels, retail spaces, corporate offices and public buildings.
