Cost of Living in Sydney

Sydney is the most expensive city in Australia and nearly double the prices of the country’s second most expensive city, Melbourne. However, it is by far the best place to live in.

Cost of Education in Sydney

Education Program Estimated Tuition Cost
Vocational Education and Training $4000-$22,000 annually
Undergraduate Bachelor’s Degree $15,000-$33,000 annually
Postgraduate Master’s Degree $20,000-$37,000 annually
Doctoral Degree $14,000-$37,000 annually

Living Costs in Sydney

Rent

According to the New South Wales government, student accommodation is more feasible for students than a private rental. For a week, it takes $200 for a fully furnished room with 24-hours support, electricity and water. While, for private rental, a one-bedroom apartment or unit in the city centre will cost a minimum of $450  weekly.

 Food

Grocery for a week can range from $80 and $280, depending on where students shop.

 Public Transport

International students under Australian Government scholarship are only eligible for concession for public transport. Other students have to opt for the adult Opal card, a contactless card used to pay public transport fares. You can check out its fare here

According to Expatistan, a regular public transport user can pay as much as $173 per month.

Entertainment

Studying abroad does just mean studying only. The “all work and play” approach will get old real quick and will also lead you to feel more drained. So it is better to maintain a balance in your life. To maintain that balance one would need at least $200 a month or so. Also, students should always have their student cards on them as many places offer student discounts.

Note: The amount mentioned is an average and is subjected to changes,  and can increase depending upon your choice of accommodation.

Job Opportunities

Usually, as an international student in Australia on a valid student visa, you can work for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session. However, during school-recognized school vacations, there is no limit on the number of hours.

Recently, the Australian government announced a temporary relaxation of working hours for student visa holders. This means students now can work more than 40 hours a fortnight in any sector of the economy. These temporary measures remain in place until further notice.

In addition, there are 402 training and research visas available, as well as 886 skilled sponsored resident visas for long-term jobs sponsored by employers.
