Reasons to study in Edinburgh

Edinburgh as a study destination is very popular among International students due to the top standard education and friendly lifestyle it offers. Universities in Scotland are known to be historic because of their education services which have been ongoing since the 5th century. Not only that, universities here are more affordable than other universities in the UK, with even cheaper living costs making it an even more welcoming degree.

Top Universities

Here are some top Edinburgh universities, that international students can consider:

 University of Edinburgh

The University of Edinburgh is currently ranked 15th in the world.  It is home to a diverse population of great minds and potential. They are associated with 19 Nobel Prize winners, who were part of the academic staff while also hosting around 45000 students from around 150 countries offering a range of on-campus courses and 70 online programs. This university is also ranked in the top 10 universities in the UK for the high graduate employment rate and is ranked 25th in the world by prospective employers.

Heriot-Watt University

Ranking 281st in the world, Heriot-Watt University is a global university with 5 campuses based in some of the world’s most inspiring places such as the UK, Dubai and Malaysia. More than one-third of the students at Heriot-watt University are international students belonging to various backgrounds. This university also hosts the GRID, which has been designed to create cohesion between different academic disciplines and the global community. They also work closely with employers and academic schools to help graduates place better in jobs and generally increase employment opportunities.

Job opportunities

Here are some of the ways an international student can work in Edinburgh during their course or after graduation.

Working as an International student

The vignette on your passport will state your working entitlement which would be around 20 hours per week during semester time and full time during official holidays. You are not allowed to work more than 20 hours, if you do so your university is legally required to report this to UKVI, which may impact the continuity of your studies and immigration status. If a student has a 4-tier visa, they are allowed to do most kinds of work; however, they cannot be self-employed, work as a professional sportsperson, be an entertainer, work as a dentist/doctor or take a permanent full-time job.

Working after graduation

To work after graduation, international students may choose the new graduate route, which allows graduates to apply for a visa in the UK to remain for two years after completing their studies for work. PhD graduates are allowed to remain in the UK for 3 years. However, it is mandatory for the student applying for this visa to have a valid tier 4 visa and a completed undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

Courses with great opportunities

These are some of the courses that are in high demand in Scotland resulting in a high employability rate:

  • Pharmacology
  • Computer Science
  • English
  • Education
  • Creative Writing
  • Animation
  • Health Sciences
  • Information system
