Benefits of studying Commercial Cookery

Learn about the benefits of studying commercial cookery and how it could lead to permanent residency and exciting career opportunities.

Strong Customer Service Skills
Hospitality workers excel in communication and listening, providing excellent service by empathizing with customers and ensuring their concerns are acknowledged. Emotional intelligence is crucial in picking up social cues and connecting well with customers.

Ability to Multitask
Hospitality is a fast-paced, high-pressure environment. Workers must think quickly, solve problems on the spot, and stay aware of the entire situation, anticipating what needs to be done next.

Tap into Your Creativity
Chefs contribute to menu creation and the presentation of dishes. This requires both an eye for design and a keen business sense to create a menu that delights customers and makes good financial sense.

Develop Great People Skills
Hospitality is a highly social industry, where teamwork and customer interaction are central. Strong communication skills are essential to engage with customers and perform well in a demanding environment.

A Growing Occupation
The hospitality sector is expanding rapidly, fueled by the food culture trend and population growth. The industry values creativity, hard work, and vision, offering opportunities for those with a passion for food and service.

Pathway to Permanent Residency
Chefs are listed on the state skilled occupation lists for Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, ACT, and NT, providing a potential pathway to permanent residency in Australia. Chefs are featured on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL), while Pastrycooks are on the Short Term Skilled Occupational Demand list (STSOL).

The Australian Government encourages skilled workers to move to regional areas to address skill shortages. Studying in a regional area offers several advantages:

  • Earn an additional 5 points on the points-based system for studying in a regional area
  • Regional visas are processed faster
  • In designated DAMA regions, you may be exempt from the minimum salary threshold ($53,900) for the new 494 and 491 visas

What is DAMA?
The Designated Area Migration Agreement (DAMA) is a formal partnership between the government and regional authorities to attract skilled workers. Working in a DAMA region exempts you from meeting the $53,900 salary threshold, making it easier to pursue permanent residency. You must be sponsored by a regional area under DAMA.

If you have questions about studying in a regional area, contact Edvise Hub for a free consultation or submit your details to arrange an appointment.
