Resume is considered as a personal marketing tool that doesn’t only sells skills, experience or achievement effectively, but also if not marketed well it put the brakes on job search. Do remember;

‘Never let your resume pushes you back from all the opportunities’

Unlike a university project, you’ll hardly get any feedback on your resume as the potential employers don’t have enough time to give a personalized critique that outlines the mistake made in resume. It is tough when the inbox stays stagnant after a job application round.

How one can get to know what’s something inappropriate in the CV?  Before blaming oneself for not capable enough or losing own mind, take out few minutes to review the way your resume is selling you short.

The Resume goes onto Two or more Pages

Being a recent graduate, you must have few or no years of pertinent experience in the workforce, if that’s the case then hold it to one-page resume. The most accomplished should also stick on one-page rather than putting extra sentences on skills, languages and interest.

Why is that so? Recruiters often avoid shuffling through pages of career details, particularly when the career hasn’t really started.

Get Stuck at the Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS)

What’s the point of making a resume that is impressive though, but never reaches the hiring manager’s desk? Today, recruiters heavily rely on applicant tracking systems (ATS) to screen through potential candidates prior asking them to appear for an interview. The system is based on algorithms and particularly designed to vet resumes and reject the candidates that don’t fit for a particular position. In between formatting and keywords, making it through the ATS; a digital gatekeeper is an art that many job seekers are unaware of.

Went all out with Resume Designs

Though resumes should be appealing not necessarily means to add intricate graphics, colorful borders or a headshot (unless the field calls it for such as; media or journalism). Such irrelevant details distract the recruiter from the important matter; the text.

If the ATS scans graphics that can’t be deciphered, then even the potential resume gets an automatic rejection.

Begin with the Wrong Information

Earlier, job applicants used to mail (physically) their cover letters and resumes to the organization but with time passing by, resume needs to reflect what is required of the time.

Now it is not essential to add header that directs the street address as it can affect the chances of securing a job. For instance; a candidate lives across the country but the other one lives down the block and possess the same qualification, the latter person is likely to be hired.

Currently it is suggested to replace the street address with digital friendly elements like, Online Profile Portfolio or LinkedIn Profile URL. Recruiters scour the internet for the candidate anyway, so make it easier for them. Also, while updating online profiles, do add email address and make sure that there isn’t a variation of name in the email.

Usually Open up with an Objective

After polishing the header, launch the meat of resume. When the eye scans the objective statement, there is a pause. These statements are general and don’t provide any additional or useful information to the employer about your career goals. So, it’s better to add professional summary instead of objective statement.  This can be the elevator pitch; it should direct to the candidate qualification and abrupt career goals. Not just focus on yourself; but tailor the summary to the employer so it feels personalized.

Include Higher School Activities

Coming up at higher academic level, it’s better to wipe all the mentions of earlier school activities on your resume. Put a focus on internships and experiences and with time passing by, start shedding those accolades with the most important one.

Doesn’t Showcase a Compelling Career Narrative

The hiring manager gets to know the right story through strong resume. Always remember, that it is a marketing document which should get along with two objectives:  job goals showcasing and target audience impression. That’s the reason; every single piece of information mentioned in the resume must highlight the achievements and qualifications. Recruiters are least interested to know about plenty of work done in the past; instead they want to check the relevant elements that indicate the candidate to be the right fit for the role applied. It directs to create a powerful narrative from career history that allows standing out from the competition.

Describe the Impact rather than just listing the Responsibilities

The resume shouldn’t display list of responsibilities from the job roles instead it should showcase the career achievements and outline the impact one made in the company. For instance writing as “maintained personal files and processed recruitment paperwork,” write as “ensured both employee engagement and legal compliance by handling an interactive orientation program.” Deprived of impactful action verbs and using quantifiable results, the resume has way to make a way to recruiters’ desk”.

Incorrectly formatted

A resume directs what the candidate does, their goals, and tells the narrative. Though, there is a need to balance the visual elements in resume so that recruiter can easily scan and understand the story. Colorful fonts and fancy design may seem good, but not appropriate in front of all employers. They look for uncomplicated resume design that shows the balance between white space and content. If the resume is not sequential, just as doesn’t logically shows experience, qualification, achievements and other  necessary elements, the recruiters move on to the next application.

Still not clear on how to ensure that the resume doesn’t sell you short in job search? Don’t worry, the resume writers at Edvise Hub help you overcome these challenges and allow creating a resume that smoothly go through the ATS, highlights achievement and qualifications, showcases the best of one and help the candidate stand out in the competition.
