Postgraduate

In Australia, Universities and private colleges offer postgraduate degrees. There are few areas such as medicine and architecture for which only universities can offer postgraduate degrees. Every student do not get selected for post graduate studies because the competition is quite high and only the best students get selected by top universities. A student has to pass the English language test with good score because the standards of entry test for post graduate study in Australian universities are high. Each university have a different entry requirement so it is better to first get some information about the selected universities and then apply for post graduate program.

Many universities offer three main types of postgraduate degrees such as graduate certificate/diploma, Masters Degree and Doctoral degree. The specific purpose of these qualifications is to broaden the skills and knowledge which a student has learnt in an undergraduate program and develop the vocational skills and knowledge of new professional subject area in a student. The duration of graduate certificate is six months to full time study while for a graduate diploma it takes one to two years of full time study. Bachelor degree or advanced diploma is required for getting an admission in a postgraduate program.

In a master degree program, students will have command over the field of study or expertise in a subject area of professional practice. It provides in depth knowledge of the area of specialization that the student has chosen. The duration of master degree is one to two years if students has taken full time courses otherwise it may take longer. Universities offer this degree in three different formats such as coursework, research and extended. In the coursework based master degree program, students will prepare coursework assignments, work on different projects and conduct research on various topics. Even if you have a graduate certificate or diploma, you can still apply for master degree. In a research based master degree program, most of the time student will be involved in a research which will help him to learn and gain expertise in that specific subject area. It also includes long extensive thesis or research projects which will be evaluated by the external authorities. The entry requirements include bachelor degree (Honors) or master preliminary year. In the Masters Degree based on the extended format, students will go through a work based project. The entry requirements for this degree include suitable qualification and professional experience or comprehensive professional experience which is relevant to the field.

POSTGRADUATE

Student can pursue a doctoral degree if he wants to contribute considerable amount of his new knowledge and time to a specific field or adapt, apply and interpret the existing knowledge. The duration of Doctoral degree is three to four years if student take full time courses. Universities offer this degree in two formats which are Research doctorate (PhD) and Professional doctorate. In research doctorate, students are required to conduct extensive research which is supervised in order to prepare a thesis. The entry requirements for this degree include master degree by research or a bachelor degree (Honors). The professional doctorate is a combination of coursework and research so that professionals have a chance to progress and advance their knowledge in their area of specialization without making any research commitments of a PhD. The entry requirements include master degrees by research or bachelor degree (Honors) and relevant professional experience before or during the degree program.

There are many subjects in which students can apply for post graduate studies. These subjects include Administration Studies, Architecture Studies, Art Studies, Business Studies, Construction, Design Studies, Economic Studies, Education, Energy Studies, Engineering Studies, Environmental Studies, General Studies, Humanities Studies, Journalism and Mass Communication, Law Studies, Life Sciences, Management Studies, Marketing Studies, Natural Sciences, Professional Studies, Social Sciences, Sport, Sustainability Studies, Technology Studies, Tourism and Hospitality. Even though all post graduate degree programs have different requirements but the high level English test score is compulsory for all students. These programs usually start from end of February to mid November. Universities more often divide the courses in two or three semesters by offering summers as a third semester. In doctoral degree, students can negotiate with their project supervisors to start the project or research on an alternative starting date.
