McGill University Overview
Established in the year 1821 in Montreal, Quebec, McGill University is a public research university founded by a royal charter issued by King George IV. It is named after a Scottish trader James McGill whose donation helped establish the University of McGill College in 1813. The name of the university changed to McGill University. The prestigious McGill University is regarded as one of the top universities in Canada and has been ranked consistently as one of the best universities in the world.
Since 1926, McGill University has been a member of the Association of American Universities; the organization gathers the leading research universities in North America. Downtown Campus
The Downtown Campus is situated on 80 acres of land in downtown Montreal at the foot of Mount Royal and it started operating as an educational institution in 1829 when the first classes were held on the former estate of James McGill. MacDonald Campus
The second campus, Macdonald Campus consists of 650 hectares of land in Sainte- Anne-de-Bellevue on the western tip of the island of Montreal. It is the largest private landholding in the region and is home to over 70 buildings. The campus houses the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Science, the School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, the McGill School of Environment and the Institute of Parasitological.
Gault Nature Campus
Even though this campus is not an academic campus, the Gault Nature Reserve is considered to be an important part of McGill’s real estate portfolio. The private reserve encompasses 1000 hectares of land and is located in Mont-Saint-Hilaire. The campus supports important teaching and research activities and also a recreational sector with trails of 25 km.
McGill University Admission Requirements

Basic Requirements
All applicants regardless of country of origin or background must meet these minimum academic requirements:
- Have earned an accredited or recognized university degree (equivalent to a McGill undergraduate degree, Bachelor’s) which would serve as a basis of admission to a graduate degree program at a recognized research-intensive university in the same country.
- The university degree, described above, must have been completed with a minimum standing of 3.0/4.0 or the equivalent, according to grading scale on the transcript.
- Applicants must also meet any academic requirements set by the McGill graduate department to which they are applying. Admission to McGill is competitive and meeting the minimum standard does not guarantee acceptance.
English Language Requirements
As English is the primary language of instruction and communication at McGill, applicants are required to have English language proficiency scores. International applicants must have an English language proficiency score in order to be eligible for both postgraduate and graduate programs. Hence, you must show proficiency in English using one of the following options
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) minimum scores are:
- IBT (Internet Based Test): 86 overall scores and no less than 20 in each of the four components.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) minimum band score of 6.5 or greater.
- McGill Certificate of Proficiency in English or McGill Certificate of Proficiency – English for Professional Communication: Certificate of Proficiency awarded.
GMAT Requirements
GMAT scores are mandatory for applying to graduate degrees and programs.
- GMAT or Graduate Management Admissions Test is accepted for graduate programs and degrees. The minimum score requirement is 670. GMAT scores also help students get admission and be eligible for the scholarship.

Engineering- Mineral and Mining
Engineering – Mineral and Mining have made the top ten for six consecutive years so there is no doubt that it is one of the best universities for mineral and mining engineering.
