Job Opportunities for International Students in Germany

Germany is one of those countries that attracts international students like no other country ever has due to the reason that it provides cheap education with high standards for students around the world. This country is the fourth largest economy across the world and is one of the largest across Europe. German’s unemployment rate is very low comparatively. Numerous nationally and internationally well-known business are located in Germany offering limitless employment opportunities.

Language Requirements for International Students

Students who are studying abroad have many questions in their minds; where they want to work after graduation, will they continue working in the same country or will they seek jobs in other countries. For the international students in Germany, there are many opportunities in terms of employment but many think that if they need to learn German or not. In Germany, many multinational firms are operating where the main language used is English however, international students where they are doing part-time jobs along with their studies are hired for odd jobs so they need to learn German to communicate with the locals

It is easier for German-speaking individuals to adapt to the lifestyle of the country. The local language of the country helps the person to easily communicate with the locals and in firms. The ability to speak good German will increase the individual’s chances of getting employed. Due to this the government of Germany provides vocational language courses for those who are non-EU residents. These courses are available all-around Germany, the individuals can choose from different models. The basic model teaches German language skills that are commonly a requirement in the labor market. The models help the non-Germans to develop different skills like vocabulary, phrases and some words that are important for some careers.

Post Study Work Permit

International students from outside of Europe who wish to work in Germany after their graduation can prolong their residence permit for up to eighteen months to find employment related to their degrees. To apply for the prolonged residence permit, the student will need:

  • Passport
  • University degree certificate or official document from the university stating that the student has completed their degree
  • A document which proves that the student has insurance
  • Evidence that proves that the student can help themselves financially

The eighteen months for the residence permit will eventually begin as soon as the student receives their final semester result, during these months the student can find employment related to their studies. When the students get a job of their interest, they should apply for a German residence permit or EU Blue Card which is similar to the US Green Card. The student can live in Germany while their application is impending. The card is accessible in other European countries also. The international student applying for the card needs to have an income of at least 49,600 euros.

For EU Blue Card, it has a period of 4 years or a job period as well as three months. Along with thirty-three months of employment, the international student can eventually apply for Permanent Residence Permit.

If the student returns to their home country but wants to travel back to Germany later to find employment they can apply for a Jobseeker Visa. It is a six-month visa which enables the student to seek the job related to their studies. The student must be able to provide evidence that they can support themselves while looking for job opportunities, which is especially significant as individuals are not allowed to work on this visa.
