How To Tackle your Career Change Process

Table of Contents

  • Whip your resume into the required shape
  • Reflect on informational interviews
  • Don’t be scared to apply
  • Give a last go

Sometimes, even if you aim to, it’s wholly within reach. Although it could be simple as taking online course or attaining proficiency so that you can self-confidently stand with the skills you acquired. Often you need extensive education to sleuth this out and make decision even the front-end investment this pivot demands or not. Moreover, outline the additional resources to pull this off as required. Will you have to compromise on responsibilities or activities that you carry out more often? Do you need extra support to handle all this? Assume that all these went well, now you need to create an effective plan.

Search suitable occupations on your list

Make a list of the occupation you want to see yourself in. For each listed one, look at the educational requirements, advancements opportunities, job description and outlook, and earnings. These could be easily acquired from platforms like Indeed, Glassdoor, LinkedIn, and CareerBuilder.  It could integrate the information from multiple sources that eventually save time from looking at individuals listings.

Set your goals

By this time, decide on the final career path you want to see yourself at.  Before planning a job in that field, first set some useful goals. It could be both short and long term goals. For instance, receiving an associate degree is short term goal whereas getting licensed for particular role is a long-term goal. Make sure that the actionable goals advance your progress in relevant aspects.

Whip your resume into the required shape

As you may not have experienced in the field you aim to enter- everyone has which is known as transferrable skills, one that almost every manager expect their employees to have. While making a career change, these skills are important to highlight because after certain number of working years, your education and training need a backseat to skills like:

  • Communication: Can you influence people, manage conflict and build relationship in positive ways?
  • Managing change: Is it easy for you to handle change?
  • Complex problem solving: Can you look for opportunities in adversity?
  • Leadership: Can you integrate people around a future vision?

Take a deep look at your new career path and identify the transferable skills that will be more relevant and valuable. And then put your best to make them stand out on your resume. It is highly recommended to show these through experience rather than just telling it through written words.

Reflect on informational interviews

As choosing a new career path and considering for new jobs in the field – set up informational interviews with the people who are already doing what you would want to one day. They would be better at guiding and advising on how to enter the field, the scope, various opportunities and how to attempt on job interviews – all valuable to someone new in this career.

Rather than coming up with sentences like

“I am looking for a job”

do come up as

“Can you provide me relevant information regarding this matter”

Rather than the former hard sell, approach the soft sell of asking for information that could be useful in job search and career journey. People, who are genuinely happy about their career choice and want to make a way out of it loves to discuss thing related to it through informal meetings.

Don’t be scared to apply

You have finally settled on the career you want to take for long. Also, you have smoothly whipped your resume into the desired shape. Now you have already talked with people who are in this career field. And yet, you’re afraid to apply only because you might get rejected. Despite of the fear residing in you, apply anyway. For instance, if you are looking for a job at particular company, then send a resume there. Even after receiving a rejection letter— or in any case there is no such response then it is better doing something than nothing. In simple words, the energy vibe you will sense—the palpable power—will be stimulating.  It indicates that the act of drafting a cover letter and concentrating on action that might resolve conflicts in work is empowering.

Give a last go

So here you have an idea on how to deal with successful career change process. If you’ve dreamt about the a career but unsure about how to test the options, your interest, the scope and other measure on how to start then apply these principles and simply see where it actually takes you. Other than the written long suggestions, if you feel to make one-on-one interaction through the career consultation session then choose an experienced and reliable source. Not a person with similar education background can guide you in an effective manner, in fact proper educational consultation is crucial to explore the inner you. The consultants use their experience in learning to identify the special needs in terms of career choice as well. This might be of great help when facing problems when studying abroad or aiming to switching the career.
