Why standardized tests are important in Pakistan

The reason why so many students prepare for standardised tests every year and give their best is to apply to universities abroad and fulfil their dreams of studying abroad. Through these tests like the SAT, GRE, GMAT, TOEFL, PTE etc. the academic performance of the students is assessed. Through one standardised evaluating system testing students all over the world, admission committees can fairly judge student learning and then make the necessary decisions. Different programs and different universities have different criteria for accepting students and in order to get into the study program of their choice, the students have to work hard to show their efforts in these standardised tests.

Understanding the SAT, GRE, GMAT, and TOEFL

In the United States, the students’ abilities and readiness for higher education or professional programs is judged through these standardised tests. Here is a brief overview of each of these tests and what they entail:

  • SAT: standardised test is used by many colleges and universities in the US as part of their admissions process to assess the knowledge of the student in maths, reading and writing
  • GRE: the graduate record examination is used by graduate schools in the US and many other countries to see if the applicant is ready for a graduate level study. It includes verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing
  • GMAT: graduate management admission test is usually for business schools around the world for entry into MBA programs. There is an analytical writing section, integrated reasoning, quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning
  • PTE: The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is a computer-based language proficiency exam that tests your ability to speak, read, write, and listen in English. The exam is designed to assess your overall language ability and is broken down into three main sections: speaking and writing, reading, and listening.
  • TOEFL: Test of English as a Foreign Language is used to assess non-native English speakers’ abilities in academic settings so that colleges and universities in the US and other countries can see if the international student can adapt to the education system

Test-taking strategies for standardized tests

Some of the useful testing strategies for the standardised tests are:

  • Familiarise yourself with the format of the test thoroughly. Each of these tests has a unique format and structure. You need to know the timing of the test before taking out and be very familiar with the instructions and types of questions that will be asked.
  • Practice with sample questions and past tests so that the format of the test is not a surprise to you. There are online courses in test preparation resources as well to help you with this
  • Learn to manage your time wisely and pace yourself for each question. Don’t spend too much time on any one question
  • Always read the questions carefully earn big the keywords and phrases to identify what you need to answer
  • Remember to take care of your health – rest and eat healthy. Bring snacks and water to the test centre to help you stay focused

Developing a study plan for standardized tests

Making a study plan for the standardised tests absolutely necessary so that you can focus your efforts and use your time effectively:

  • Start by assessing your current level – take a practice test and see your areas of weakness and strength
  • Do not in for the perfect score, instead set a target score is done your goals and requirements of the program that you are applying to
  • Time your tests and see how much time you’re taking for each question. This will help you decide which section needs more effort
  • Break down the curriculum of the test into sections for example if you’re taking the GRE test, divide the verbal, quantitative and analytical sections accordingly
  • Make a clear schedule and decide how much time you are going to allocate to each section. Then keep tracking your progress regularly and evaluate if you need to revise your study plan or do you need additional help

Utilizing practice tests and test prep resources

Tests like SAT, GRE, PTE and TOEFL have study guides and other test prep resources easily available so make sure you utilise these for your benefit and prepare tips for yourself:

  • When you use the practice tests, make sure to analyse the results as a diagnosis for yourself. This can help you see where you need more work and information. Direct your focus in those areas
  • Study guides and materials should help you with the explanations of the concepts behind the questions and help you formulate strategies to tackle the questions
  • Experienced instructors can offer additional practice exercises and personalised feedback with a structured test prep course. If you’re struggling to prepare on your own, you can in role in this kind of course

Applying standardized test scores for admissions to higher education programs

Standardised scores are utilised in many ways to assess the abilities of a student aiming to apply into a higher education program:

  • The SAT and ACT are used for undergraduate admissions in the United States period as the GRE is used for graduate admissions. These tests are used to compare scores with other applicants scores so that admission committees can assess the competitiveness of the applicant pool and compare applicants with similar academic backgrounds
  • Tests like TOEFL or PTE are used to demonstrate English proficiency. If there is a university that requires an English proficiency test for non-native speakers, the scores will have to be provided to see whether the student can participate in the coursework and academic discussions
  • Sometimes the scores are also used to determine the eligibility of a student for a scholarship or financial aid that is based on merit

Once you follow these important steps towards achieving your academic goals, performing in the test will be fairly easy for you. This will then lead to the achievement of your academic and career goals. Remember to revise the test content and develop a good study plan to work on your vegan areas.
