What has changed?
By 2025 the landscape of English language testing has changed as traditionally rigid assessment systems have become smarter, faster and more flexible in format representing the global digital era. For the international students, particularly Pakistani students, this represents a major breakthrough in making English testing more accessible, cost-effective, and achievable for students. Let us look into the evolution PTE Academic/ Core, IELTS, and TOEFL iBT have gone through lately.
What’s New in PTE:
- As of August 2025, PTE Academic will be conducting a maximum of 2 hours 15 minutes test by introducing 2 new speaking tasks into the assessment. The tasks included are “Respond to a Situation” and “Summarize a Group Discussion”, and the break during the tests has been removed. Additionally, some questions types will be reduced or revised to ensure more focus and relevance on the overall PTE Academic experience.
- The Pearson English Express Test will be launched in Q4 2025 in 8 countries (Brazil, Mexico, the US, Japan, France, Italy, Germany, and Spain) with more countries to follow in 2026. Its duration is of only 1 hour with the same-day scoring, designed to evaluate English language proficiency for students who want to study in US.
- Pearson has added AI scoring to some speaking and writing tasks along with human expert auditing, to address biases and deliver fairness in evaluation.
What’s New for TOEFL:
Administered by ETS, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) has changed tremendously in the last several years;
- Since July 2023, the test conducted is under 2 hours
- Writing for an Academic Discussion has been introduced as a new writing task replacing the Independent Essay task, representing a real-life online academic forum in accordance with modern university settings.
- In order to increase security and reduce impersonation, TOEFL has taken measures to introduce AI-enhanced ID checks and biometric verification, making international applicants more secure and preventing cases of impersonation for fair and just assessment.
- TOEFL now allows students to use their best scores from each test section across multiple test dates to create a single “superscore” for university applications. Particularly, helpful to students who aspire to study in top-tier universities with strict deadline.
What’s New for IELTS:
- Students can avail One Skill Retake where they only need to retake one of the four test sections of Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking within 60 days of the initial computer-delivered exam without the need to repeat the whole exam in case one wants to improve scores. Academic, General Training and even UKVI format is offered in computer-based testing centers in more than 110 countries.
- Computer-delivered IELTS now provides up to three testing sessions daily on almost all days in a week thus students have a better flexibility when it comes to taking the exam. From March 9, 2025, most centers are expected to phase out paper-based IELTS in favour of the computer mode.
- Some testing centers including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Multan, Faisalabad, Peshawar, and others are evaluating video-recorded Speaking modules, such that students can submit responses via a recorded format rather than face-to-face.
- The results of computer-based IELTS are delivered in 3 to 5 days compared to 13 days for paper tests.
Which test is best for you?
By 2025, international students must compare IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE by analyzing the costs, structure, and acceptance of the exams in the country of their application. The most popular and relatively affordable alternative is IELTS, which currently costs between $195 and $310 USD, and it has 48 test dates every year. For TOEFL iBT, where the standard cost is around $200 and $250 USD, is preferred by the U.S. institutions and resembles the academic classroom activity in a digital format. It is best suited to students who are not afraid of American English and longer tests. Technology-friendly and fully computer-based, PTE is newer form of test, which can be taken at a price of $275 USD and has quick results within 2-5 days. It also has objective AI-scoring which is not accepted by all universities or immigration agencies.
Choosing the particular test will depend on the country of study where you would like to go, and how quickly you would like the results. IELTS is best for the UK, Canadian and Australian universities. TOEFL is perfect for U.S. admissions. PTE is becoming popular in Europe, Australia and the UK. Thus, if you need fast scoring and a fully digital experience, particularly for these countries PTE is a very good option. TOEFL is a good choice, if you prefer academic material and structured exam. And to the individuals who seek global recognition forms of the tests, IELTS is the most accessible and flexible choice.
