Studying in Australia will prove to be an exciting step into a bright future for sure. Now comes the part where you need to apply for an Australia student visa aka Subclass 500.

As an international student planning to pursue your education in Australia, obtaining a student visa is a crucial step in the application process. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the necessary steps to successfully apply for a student visa, ensuring a smooth transition to your chosen educational institution in Australia.

Understanding Student Visa (Subclass 500)

The Student Visa (subclass 500) allows international students to live, work and study in Australia for a maximum of five years, in line with your course. While on a student visa, you will be allowed to work for 48 hours per fortnight during term time across all sectors and full-time during semester break.

Applying for an Australian Student Visa: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Apply to a School in Australia and Obtain a CoE

The first step in the student visa application process is to apply and gain acceptance into an Australian educational institution. Once you receive an offer letter from your chosen school, you must accept the offer in writing and pay the required tuition deposit. Subsequently, the institution will issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) document, which is a vital requirement for your visa application.

It’s important to note that if you plan to pursue multiple programs, such as a language course followed by a college degree, you will need a separate CoE for each program.

If you require assistance with the application process, there are education agents available to help you apply to Australian universities free of charge. These experts can guide you through the application process, ensuring that all necessary documents are submitted correctly.

Step 2: Create an Account with the Australian Immigration Authorities

To apply for a student visa in Australia, you must create an account on the official website of the Australian immigration authorities. You will use this account to track the status of your visa application and submit it.

During the account creation process, you will be required to provide personal details, including your name, phone number, and email address. Additionally, you will need to create a password and accept the terms and conditions.

Step 3: Gather the Required Documents

Before proceeding with the visa application, ensure that you have all the necessary documents in digital format. These documents will vary depending on your specific circumstances and the type of visa you are applying for. Here are some essential documents you will likely need:

  • Passport
  • 4 recent passport-sized photos
  • Birth certification and national identification
  • Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE)
  • Form 157A
  • Overseas Student Health Cover
  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Statement of Genuine Temporary Entrant
  • Evidence of funds
  • Academic transcripts and certificates
  • Police certificate
  • If you are taking a dependent with you then provide proof of relationship with them

The specific requirements may vary based on your nationality, chosen institution, and visa type. All the important documents you could need for a student visa application are included in the list provided above. You can be required to submit more or less documents while applying for a student visa, depending on the circumstances surrounding your application. Before submitting, be sure that all of these documents have been certified or attested. You will need to get the documents translated into English if they are not already in English.

Step 4: Complete the Online Visa Application

Once you have gathered all the required documents, you can proceed to complete the student visa application online. The appropriate visa subclass for most international students is the Student Visa Subclass 500.

The online application can be accessed through the Department of Home Affairs website. Fill in your nationality, CoE code, and select the relevant education sector, such as ELICOS for language courses or Higher Education for university degree programs.

The application will require you to provide personal details, family information, educational background, work experience, health details, and information about any criminal record. You can save your progress and return to the application later if needed.

Step 5: Pay the Visa Fee and Obtain a TRN-number

After completing the online application, you will need to pay the visa application fee, which is currently AUD 710. The fee can be paid online using a credit card. Visit the Department of Home Affairs website for detailed instructions on making the payment.

Once the payment is processed, you will receive a receipt with a Transaction Reference Number (TRN). Remember to save this number as it will be required for tracking the progress of your application.

Step 6: Health Check-up and Interview

Depending on your circumstances and the visa subclass you are applying for, you may be required to undergo a health check-up and/or an interview. The Department of Home Affairs will provide instructions if these additional steps are necessary for your application.

When completing the health check-up, ensure that you have your TRN number as it will be required by the approved doctors performing the examination. A list of approved doctors can be found on the Department of Home Affairs website

Step 7: Visa Decision

The duration for receiving a decision on your student visa application can vary depending on various factors, including your location and the workload of the immigration authorities. In general, applicants receive a decision within a few weeks if all the required documents are in order.

Step 8: Travel to Australia

Once you have obtained your student visa, you are ready to travel to Australia. You are permitted to enter the country up to 90 days before the start date of your course, as indicated on your CoE. If you have not arranged accommodation through your educational institution, make sure to provide your address in Australia within seven days of arrival.

During your stay in Australia, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the local culture and make the most of your educational experience. Explore the vibrant cities, engage with the local community, and take advantage of the numerous opportunities available to international students.

Conclusion

Applying for a student visa to study in Australia requires careful preparation and attention to detail. By following the step-by-step process outlined in this guide, you can navigate the application process with confidence. If you are still confused about the process and could use some help then contact Edvise Hub and our consultants will help you throughout the way.
