The 482 visa, officially known as the Temporary Skill Shortage visa or TSS visa in Australia, remains one of the most popular pathways for skilled professionals to work legally in Australia. Even though the visa subclass number 482 has been replaced by the new Skills in Demand (SID) visa since 7 December 2024, thousands of applications lodged before that date are still processed under the original subclass 482 visa rules — and the name TSS 482 continues to be widely used.

This employer sponsored visa 482 lets Australian businesses hire overseas talent when they cannot find suitably skilled Australian workers. In the 2023–24 program year, over 44,000 employer-sponsored places were granted — a 44% increase from the previous year — making the tss 482 the backbone of skilled temporary migration.

What is the 482 Visa (TSS Visa)?

The temporary skill shortage visa is a temporary employer-sponsored visa with three main streams:

Stream Target Roles Maximum Stay PR Pathway After

Labour Agreement Specific industry or regional agreements Up to 4 years Often included

Key benefits include:

  • No upper age limit
  • Full work rights for partners
  • Children can study in Australian schools
  • Access to Medicare
  • Clear pathway to permanent residency via subclass 186 (ENS)

Pathway to Permanent Residency

One of the biggest advantages of the tss 482 is the direct route to permanent residency.

Regional 494 → 191 3 years in regional area Under 45 Competent

From late 2025, almost all 482 visa holders in the Medium-term / Core Skills stream will be eligible for PR after just 2 years with the same employer — one of the most generous transitions in the world.

The 482 visa (TSS visa) continues to be a powerful option for skilled workers and Australian employers alike. With strong demand across IT, healthcare, engineering, and hospitality, now is an excellent time to explore this employer sponsored visa 482 pathway.

FAQs

Q: What is the difference between 482 visa and the new Skills in Demand visa?

A: The 482 visa was replaced on 7 December 2024. Applications lodged before that date continue under TSS 482 rules; new applications use the SID visa framework.

A: No — you are tied to your sponsor. To change employers, a new nomination and visa application are required.

Q: Do I need a skills assessment for the TSS 482 visa?

A: Only for certain trade and professional occupations (e.g., engineers, chefs, electricians).

Q: Is there an age limit for the 482 visa?

A: No upper age limit for the visa itself, but PR pathways generally require you to be under 45.

Q: How long is the 482 visa valid?

A: Short-term stream: up to 2 years (4 with international agreement); Medium-term & Labour Agreement: up to 4 years.

Q: Can my family work and study on the 482 visa?

A: Yes — spouses have full work rights and children can attend school.
